Congo DRC senatorial electionsAccording to the results published by the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) on January 20 2007, the Alliance for the Presidential Majority (AMP) of president Joseph Kabila have achieved an absolute majority with 58 senate seats out of a total of 108. In contrast, the Union for the Nation (UpN) of Jean Pierre Bemba won a total of 21 seats.

Cardinal Frédéric Etsou-Nzabi-BamungwabiCitizens in the Democratic Republic of Congo are mourning the death of Cardinal Frederic Etsou-Nzabi-Bamungwabi, the country's top Roman Catholic prelate. Cardinal Etsou died on January 6 of pneumonia in Belgium. As his body was returned for a scheduled burial in the Congo on Monday, mourners remembered him as a religious and political leader.
