UN Sanctions FDLR Leaders, CNDP Rebel Commander Integrated into Army

UN Security CouncilThe United Nations Security Council imposed targeted measures including travel bans and asset freezes on three Democratic Forces for the Liberation of Rwanda (FDLR) leaders and a former Congrès National pour la Défense du Peuple (CNDP) commander integrated in the Congolese Armed Forces (FARDC), on Wednesday, at the request of the permanent missions to the United Nations of France, the United Kingdom, and the United States.
DR Congo launches 'Amani Leo' military operation

Congo FARDC soldiersThe Democratic Republic of Congo has ended the "Kimia 2" operation in North Kivu and South Kivu provinces and launched "Amani Leo" (a Kiswahili word for "peace today"), according to the military. Kimia 2 has already achieved its objectives with nearly 5,000 combatants of the Democratic Forces for the Liberation of Rwanda (FDLR) neutralized by the FARDC with the logistical support from the UN mission in DR Congo (MONUC).

Didier EtumbaKimia II operations will probably be launched this Sunday in South Kivu province. This announcement was made in Bukavu on Thursday by the Chief of Staff of the Congolese Armed Forces (FARDC) Didier Etumba at a press briefing. So far troops in Kimia II operations have been taking position and merely responding to attacks by the FDLR. They are now in the active phase of the operation.
