UN Report: CNDP, Congolese Soldiers Involved in Illegal Mining Operations

CNDP soldiers in CongoA report by a group of experts monitoring UN sanctions on the Democratic Republic of Congo has implicated former CNDP soldiers, now part of the Congolese Armed Forces, in the illegal exploitation of mineral resources in eastern Congo. The report says that “units of the former Congrès national pour la défense du peuple (CNDP) in FARDC have gained military control over most of the strategic areas rich in natural resources in the Kivus, presenting a challenge to their integration into FARDC.”

MONUC peacekeepers in GomaThe Operation's principal objectives are to protect civilian populations, clear strategic areas of negative forces, hold territory liberated from FDLR control, and assist in restoring State authority in these zones. The Special Representative also informed the Council that Operation Amani Leo would include preventive interventions aimed at stopping the FDLR from regrouping and attacking civilian populations and re-occupying major mining areas.

Congo FARDC soldiersThe Democratic Republic of Congo has ended the "Kimia 2" operation in North Kivu and South Kivu provinces and launched "Amani Leo" (a Kiswahili word for "peace today"), according to the military. Kimia 2 has already achieved its objectives with nearly 5,000 combatants of the Democratic Forces for the Liberation of Rwanda (FDLR) neutralized by the FARDC with the logistical support from the UN mission in DR Congo (MONUC).
