Lra: mediation effort failed, verything ready for forced disarmament

MISNA - October 7, 2005 6:34 PM

The last attempt for mediation to secure the voluntary disarmament of 300 (or 400 say other sources) Ugandan rebels of the LRA that have been staying in the eastern part of the Democratic Republic of Congo for the past few days according to MONUC's Radio Okapi. The peacekeepers have failed to convince the LRA members to put down their weapons voluntarily during this morning's meeting. According to the radio, the attack to forcefully disarm the Ugandans is about to start. The area of Faradje (Aba territory) where the LRA rebels are located is completely surrounded by a group of a few hundred special Congolese military units. According to information available, however, n an attempt to resist the LRA has already split into various small units spreading throughout the territory. The local population is highly concerned, fearing prolonged clashes between the Congolese army and the rebels.
